5 tips to make the most out of your session
Tips from a Family Photographer in Kent to Make Your Photoshoot Fun and Stress-Free
If you’ve ever tried to take a photo of your children where everyone’s smiling and looking at the camera – you already know it can be a challenge!
But that’s the beauty of it. Real family photography is all about capturing the love, laughter, and genuine connection that make every family unique.
As an experienced family photographer, with my additional time spent capturing school and nursery portraits, I’ve learned that preparation is key. When kids arrive feeling comfortable and parents feel relaxed, everything falls into place.
That’s why I thought I’d write this quick guide, to equip you with all the information for you and your children to arrive at our session feeling relaxed and ready to capture some gorgeous photos.

Discuss the photoshoot ahead of time
Kids love being part of the plan. I would suggest that a few days before the shoot, chat with them about what’s going to happen. Keep the tone positive and light, perhaps describe the experience as more like an adventure.
If you’re looking for a studio based set-up
A few days before the shoot, chat with them about what’s going to happen. Keep the tone positive and light — describe it like an adventure rather than a “photo session.”
You might say things like:
“We’re going to the park for some fun photos!”
“The photographer will take pictures while we play together!”
For older children, you can even show them some examples of relaxed, natural photos so they know it’s not about standing still and saying “cheese.”
By setting expectations and making it sound exciting, you’ll help them feel confident and curious rather than nervous.
Dress them comfortably (and co-ordinate)
The best family outfits are comfortable and co-ordinated. Of course you want everyone to look great, but it’s also really important that the children feel relaxed and comfortable. This always reflects in the photos.
Avoid itchy tags, tight waistbands, or anything that might bother them. If your child feels good, they’ll move freely naturally and show their real personality.
Pro tip: Do a “test run” of outfits a few days before to ensure nothing itches or scratches.

Pack a photoshoot essentials bag
This is where many parents underestimate what they’ll need. A well-prepared bag can make a world of difference in smiles and photo quality.
Useful items
Snacks (non-messy only)
Snacks can be a fantastic at making children feel at ease, and a great motivation for those who need that extra bit of support.
Tissues and wipes
These are needed for correcting runny noses, drool, food smudges, dirt, and pen / paint marks.
A small comb / brush
for flyaway hairs or quick touch-ups.
A backup outfit (especially for toddlers)
Accidents happen and it’s always good to be prepared.
favourite comfort items
Feel free to bring favourite toys, blankets, or any comfort items. These help kids feel safe and can be used to grab their attention or earn co-operation. They also make adorable, sentimental photos if they end up being included.

Let them be themselves
This is the golden rule. Don’t worry if your child is shy, silly, or bursting with energy… that’s what makes them them.
Some of the loveliest photos happen when children are free to play and express themselves. I’ll often encourage a mixture of posed portraits and candid moments to really capture the family dynamics.
If your child runs off to chase butterflies mid-shoot, don’t panic. Sometimes those spontaneous moments turn into the most beautiful images.
Final thoughts
Preparing kids for a family photoshoot doesn’t need to be stressful . With a bit of planning and the right mindset, it can be a genuinely fun and memorable day.
As a family photographer in Kent, my goal is to make every session feel relaxed. Whether we’re exploring a local park, playing at the beach, or creating cozy studio portraits, the experience should feel completely natural.
If you’re ready to create some beautiful family photos, I’d love to help you make it happen.
